After the high crash rate of teen drivers, seniors have the next highest collision rate on a per mile driven basis.

Building on the success of our teen driver instructional technology, ADEPT Driver is developing a science-based senior driver program that is designed to reduce collision rates and extend freedom of mobility for senior drivers. The social, driving skill, and aging process causes of senior crashes are very different than the teen population and will require different approaches to impact crash reduction. Like teenSMART, ADEPT’s senior driver program is being carefully researched and will be based on empirical factors demonstrated to cause senior citizen automobile crashes. For example, numerous well respected research studies indicate that visual cognition and visual processing speed are directly related to senior driver crash involvement.

As a result, visual cognition and visual processing speed testing and rehabilitation will be important components in our senior driver program. Also, ADEPT expects to leverage its $6 million investment in computer-based driving simulations and diagnostics when developing the senior program. Our senior program is expected to be launched in 2010.
