teenSMART Questions
The teenSMART crash reduction program picks up where basic driver education leaves off. It is designed to give new-to-the-road teen drivers the advanced, real-world skills they need to drive safely and avoid collisions.
teenSMART teaches new drivers to anticipate dangerous situations, recognize how risk changes as they drive, increase situational awareness, and expect the unexpected!
Teens that complete teenSMART reduce their chance of a collision by an average of 28% and up to 49%, and have 51% fewer bodily injury claims than teens that do not complete the program. In addition, the chances of receiving a traffic citation one year after training are reduced by an average of 54% and up to 67%.
teenSMART focuses on the leading causes of collisions for young drivers and helps them learn how experienced drivers deal with those challenges. Some of the safety concepts teenSMART teaches include recognizing hazards and being more aware of the space all around the vehicle.
The teenSMART program includes approximately four hours of computer time, plus parent-teen and in-car exercises. Training is divided into short 20-minute modules so teens can complete the program at their own pace.
ADEPT Driver does not set deadlines for completion of teenSMART, however individual insurance companies may have completion deadlines. Please confirm any deadline requirements with your insurance agent.
Yes, each teen going through the teenSMART program needs a unique user license. If you are purchasing for more than one teen in your household, when you place your order you will receive an additional $20 discount for the additional teen(s).
“teenSMART is regularly $119.95, though there are discounts available for our insurance partner customers. Please check with your insurance agent if you did not receive a discount code, or call 877-233-7879 and ask an ADEPT Driver Customer Service Representative for help finding a discount code.
We don’t have the ability to calculate your insurance savings as that will vary based on your insurance company, state, and the specific details of your insurance policy. Please reach out to your insurance agent to find out how much you can save after your teen completes teenSMART.
Please go to https://www.adeptdriver.com/teensmart/ to see the complete list of companies and states where discounts are available. Regardless of the company, we always suggest that you contact your local insurance agent to confirm your teen's eligibility for a discount upon teenSMART completion. Your agent can also help calculate your actual premium savings upon completion of the program. Please note that ADEPT Driver cannot guarantee any insurance discounts upon teenSMART completion.
Yes, teens must have a driver license or permit because the program includes drive-time exercises in the car with the parent and the teen.
NO - teenSMART is not a substitute for Drivers Ed. It was designed for teens who already have their permit or license to give them the driving and crash avoidance skills it would normally take them several years to acquire.
NO - teenSMART is not part of the Department of Motor Vehicles permit or licensing process and should not be completed until after the teen has at least their driver permit and has completed several driver training sessions.
- Interactive computer-based lessons and practice: Realistic and challenging driving simulations that address the six leading causes of teen driver crashes and develop neurocognitive pathways associated with crash avoidance skills.
- Parent-Teen activities: Safe driving discussions, videos, and in-car driving exercises reinforce the computer-based lessons.
- A certification test at the end of the program: Teens complete the test on their home computer, at their own pace. See test results and receive proof of completion in minutes.
We mounted cameras all over a car and drove it around, and we used that footage to make our ADEPT Driver interactive driving exercises. So the teen will be asked to do things like click when they see a hazard, or click when it is safe to make a left turn through a gap in traffic.
The in-car driving exercises build on the safety concepts taught in the online exercises. The online exercises introduce the safety concepts, and the in-car driving exercises give the teen an opportunity to practice in a real world environment.
An example of an in-car exercise is one about commentary driving. The parent and teen take turns behind the wheel, and the driver is asked to talk about what they see that affects their driving. The two switch places and repeat the same exercise. The idea is to compare what the two drivers see, and the goal of the exercise is to show how more experienced drivers see more hazards and see them sooner, which gives them more reaction time.
The first part of the test is multiple-choice questions. The second part of the test is interactive driving exercises similar to the exercises the teen will have completed throughout the program.
Once the teen passes the certification test they will receive a certificate of completion via email. If the teen entered their parents' emails during registration, the parents will also receive the email with the certificate of completion.
The teen is allowed to take the test 10 times. The program will let them know when they have successfully passed the test. After 10 test attempts the teen will be required to call Product Support to request additional test attempts.
No, your teen only has to complete the program one time.
No. Only completion of the ADEPT Driver teenSMART program allows a teen to receive a teenSMART insurance discount. This is based on the discount filing with the Department of Insurance in your state. Please talk directly with your insurance agent if you have further questions about a program other than teenSMART.
That is a question that you will need to ask your insurance company. Please give your agent a call to discuss this.

This message indicates that the product does not have enough screen area to display correctly. If you are using a compatible device listed in the system specifications, there are several possible solutions:
- Ensure that the browser window is maximized to the screen (a smaller browser window may trigger the problem).
- Check the zoom control in the browser when you have the login page open and the resolution message is displayed. If the browser is Chrome, then the zoom setting can be found by clicking the button with three dots located in the upper right corner. Click the minus sign (‘-‘) to the left of the zoom percentage to lower the zoom one increment at a time. Continue until the error message clears.
- Check the display settings to make sure the display resolution is 1280x720 or larger. In Windows 10, this setting can be found by right-clicking on the desktop and left-clicking on Display Settings.
- Check for a setting that controls the size of text and objects on the screen. In Windows 10, this is called the Scale and Layout and is also in the Display Settings, just above the resolution setting. If this is set to greater than 100%, lower it to 100%.
- If you are using an iPad, rotating the iPad to landscape may fix the problem. If rotating to landscape does not help, then close/exit the browser. On the iPad’s home screen, open the Settings icon. On the left, select the entry for Safari. On the right, scroll down and select the entry for Page Zoom. Reduce the zoom percentage. Restart the iPad and open the browser to the product login page. If the problem is not fixed, repeat these steps (reduce the zoom another percentage and restart the iPad) until the problem is fixed.
Some ADEPT Driver insurance partners require teenSMART to be completed in a certain timeframe, so an expiration date is added to the license key. If you try to log in and receive a message that your license key has expired, please email or call your insurance agent/insurance customer service department to request an extension. Your insurance company should:
- Send an email to support@adeptdriver.com requesting an extension
- The email should include enough identifying information so we can find your account. This information includes:
- Customer first and last name
- User first and last name (if different than customer name)
- Email used on order
- The email should be sent from an email domain that identifies the sender as an employee of the insurance company (examplename@insurancecompany.com).

Check your browser for any ad/popup blocker or security software that may be interfering with the application.
When using a web-based program like our ADEPT Driver programs, it is important you are using the most up-to-date program files. While our programs should automatically update, sometimes settings on a local device may prevent this from occurring. This could cause the program to stop advancing. The suggestions below will help ensure you are using the latest and greatest version of our online products.
Suggestion #1
- Your browser may be blocking the auto play. Clicking the Play/Pause button on the bottom navigation bar may tell your browser it is OK to play what is on the page.

If the browser is Chrome, then the zoom setting can be found by clicking the button with three dots located in the upper right corner. Click the minus sign (‘-‘) to the left of the zoom percentage to lower the zoom to 100%.
- Try a different browser on the same device (e.g., if you are using Chrome, try Edge).
- Try a different device (for example, a newer PC or Mac might work better than a Chromebook or iPad).
- Check your internet connection. Connect your device directly to the modem/router or get as close as possible to the router.
Each user receives 10 attempts for the multiple-choice part of the certification test, and 10 attempts for the driving simulation part of the test.
If you are having trouble with multiple choice, go back to those modules that are problematic and review them. Use your menu to go to the Module Review (teenSMART and Advanced Driver) or workbook pages (Lifelong Driver) for each topic. In teenSMART, you can also review the potential certification questions for each topic. You can print out the reviews and questions for your reference. This should make passing much easier.
If you are having trouble with the driving simulations, go back to the simulations in the program that are problematic and practice them. Use your menu to go to the simulations you missed. When you have mastered them, take the test again.
Other pointers:
Do not exit the test early as that will use up a test attempt. Always let the program exit you out of the test.
For the driving simulation portion of the test:
- You must pass two of three of each driving simulation type.
- You could fail the first simulation for a given type, but then pass the second and the third, so don’t exit the test early if you don’t pass a simulation.
- Once you pass a driving simulation type, you will move on to the next type. If you end up failing a driving simulation attempt, you will only have to redo the types you have not yet passed.
Please call 800-808-5678 if you need to request additional test attempts.
You can easily resend your certificate of completion.
Log in to the appropriate program.
After certification, the default page is usually the certification “Congratulations” page. Verify your email address and click on “Send Certificate” to send a copy of your certificate to all emails on the user account (teenSMART accounts can have more than one email).
If you do not see the certification “Congratulations” page, select the “Menu” button in the upper right (click “Back to menu” if needed). Select the Certification module from the menu. This should take you to the certification “Congratulations” page. Verify your email address and click on “Send Certificate” to send a copy of your certificate to all emails on the user account (teenSMART accounts can have more than one email).
If you are in teenSMART and see the “Additional Driving Practice” page after selecting the Certification module, click the “Back” button in the lower right and then click “Play.” This should take you back to the certification “Congratulations” page.
ADEPT Driver does not make or support the SmartPath teen driver phone app. Customers with questions about the SmartPath app should call 1-800-922-8427.
