teenSMART
Helping drivers avoid crashes and injuries.
Insurance discounts available!
teenSMART teaches skills proven to dramatically reduce crash frequency and severity.
teenSMART teaches new drivers to anticipate dangerous situations, recognize how risk changes as they drive, increase situational awareness, and expect the unexpected!
Teens that complete teenSMART reduce their chance of a collision by an average of 28% and up to 49% and have 51% fewer bodily injury claims than teens that do not complete the program. In addition, the chances of receiving a traffic citation one year after training are reduced by an average of 54% and up to 67%.
teenSMART graduates and their parents report a significant decrease in the use of distracting mobile devices while driving.

What is teenSMART?
teenSMART works because it addresses the six chief factors behind teen auto collisions.
By using advanced behavioral science, research, and testing, teenSMART focuses on altering driver behavior and reducing a teen's risk of collisions.
teenSMART includes:
Interactive computer-based lessons and practice: Realistic and challenging driving simulations address the six leading causes of teen driver crashes and develop neurocognitive pathways associated with crash avoidance skills.
Parent-Teen Activities: Safe driving discussions, videos, and in-car driving exercises reinforce the computer-based lessons.
Certification: Complete tests on your home computer, at your own pace. See test results and receive proof of completion in minutes.
To begin, you need:
- A driver license or permit for the teen driver
- A parent (or licensed driver 25 or older) to help complete the Parent-Teen Activities
- A PC, Mac, Chromebook or iPad that meets the minimum specifications
- An Internet connection
- Approximately 4 hours of computer time plus parent-teen and in-car exercises. Training is divided into short 20-minute modules so teens can complete the program at their own pace.

How is teenSMART different?
Our program is superior to traditional driver-safety programs in three key ways
We treat the causes of crashes
Our programs address the causes of crashes, not the rules of the road or opinions. Starting with epidemiology studies that focus on crash reduction as a treatable behavioral disorder, our world-recognized experts created teenSMART, a scientifically-based system that targets the six leading causes of crashes that account for over 90% of all crashes.
Proven neurocognitive training
Our training dramatically improves crash reduction skills like visual awareness, hazard detection, risk perception including distracted driving, judging safe gaps in traffic flow, identifying clues of trouble, and knowing your escape route.
Verified effectiveness
Our program has been vetted by hundreds of insurance company actuaries for over two decades. Our graduates have 30% fewer crashes with 51% fewer bodily injury claims. In addition, teens are 70% less likely to receive a traffic violation. teenSMART is the most evaluated and validated teen driver crash reduction program in the world. Approved in 49 states for insurance discounts, teenSMART is the only teen driver discount approved by the California Department of Insurance for a 20% premium discount based on evidence of crash reduction.
Why be a teenSMART driver?
It Works: teenSMART uses realistic driving simulations proven to improve driving skills, attitudes and behaviors. Research has consistently shown improvement in crash reduction skills and reductions in crash frequency and severity.
It's Valid: teenSMART is the most widely evaluated and tested teen driver-safety program ever developed.
It's Proven: In repeated trials, teens who complete teenSMART have up to 30% fewer collisions one year after training than teens who didn't take teenSMART.
It's Fun: The program includes simulations and exercises that are both engaging and effective. New drivers learn to anticipate dangerous situations, develop critical decision-making skills, become aware of their surroundings and expect the unexpected.
